BCM - How did your life change when you became a mom?
Megan – I think your true self is revealed when you have children. You learn who you are and what you are about very quickly. I have gained a lot of confidence while raising my son. It sounds cliché but it's true, your priorities shift. Suddenly I was less desperate for career success and all about his well being.
BCM - What has been your most memorable moment (s) as a mom?
Megan– There isn't just one. Every Saturday morning, snuggling in bed with my son and my husband is a memory to hold on to.
BCM - What has been the biggest challenge for you in motherhood
Megan– How best to juggle work and family
BCM - How do you manage your career while being a mother and a wife? Any advice for working moms?
Megan– I am still tweaking this one. I do think it's important to be organized when you are multitasking and, if you can afford it, having help with the kids is key. Some days I pull it off and feel like superwoman but than I unravel too and skip my son's bath for the third time, hand my husband a takeout menu and barely complete a sentence at work.
If you could give another mom or expectant mom one piece of advice, what would it be?
Megan– Don't lose your identity. No matter how all consuming the role of mother is be sure to set up a weekend with your girlfriends, buy that handbag run that road race. Being a good mother is essential but being a happy woman is equally important.
How did you get into broadcast journalism?
Megan - I was an English major and enjoyed writing so I started in print journalism working for a newspaper. Eventually the excitement of TV led me to my first production assistant job. I did not go to broadcast journalism school and I knew nothing about the technical side of the business. I learned everything on the job.
As the traffic reporter for WNBC Today at 5am your day starts quite early... How do you manage your day? When do you sleep?
Megan - My alarm goes off at 2:30 a.m. and after a silent scream I stumble to the shower. You get used to it. The tradeoff is that I get to have afternoons with my son. I go to bed right after he does. That's the key. Get to bed early and nap when he's in school.
