BCM: How did your life change when you became a mom?

JM: I am a totally different person now that I am a mom of two. Physically, mentally and spiritually, being a mother truly makes you a new person. After being responsible for two kids, you realize you need to be better to be a positive influence on them. They look up to you like you are the most important thing in their life, and that makes me want to be a better person as a whole. I suddenly care less about the small things, judge less of others, and generally love more.

BCM: What has/have been your most memorable moment(s) as a mom?

JM: Every moment is precious but I love watching Noah and Noelle play together. They can be really mean to each other because they are so close in age, but when they are having fun together it truly brings tears to my eyes. I also love moments when my husband plays "gym" with the kids. He can flip them over and swing them around - stuff that I physically have a hard time doing, and I love hearing the screams and laughter..

BCM: What has been the biggest challenge for you in motherhood? Any advice for new moms?

JM: The biggest challenge for me has been being a working mom and the guilt that comes with it. I constantly asked myself if my kids would resent me for not being with them all day, and if I am doing enough as a mom. I also compared myself with other moms to see what the norm is. Once I realized every mom is different and I stopped being hard on myself, I became a better mom. My advice to new working moms: Do what makes you happy, because a happy mom makes a happy family. And any time you spend with your kids, make sure you are truly spending time with them, and put your cell phone away because texts, emails, and status updates can all wait.

BCM: Congratulations on the continued success of TWELVElittle. Can you share what inspired you to launch TWELVElittle?

JM: Our Cofounder (and my bestfriend) Jen and I were at the age when most of our friends were thinking of having kids or were pregnant. Conversations about babies and motherhood were common, and having quite fashion-forward friends, one of their biggest fears was all the possible changes that could happen to their style.

Since Jen and I were both working in the fashion accessories industry, we naturally thought of what handbags moms are carrying after having kids. And when we realized their options were limited, we were excited to launch TWELVElittle. Having studied Industrial design from RISD and with experience designing handbags, creating stylish and functional diaper bags absolutely made sense. Also, as a mom and business owner, there are certain design innovations and ideas for bay gear that can only happen through motherhood. It is the real mom-life experiences that really push your creativity and determination to build a business to help parenting. Knowing that your product or business helps fellow moms is one of the most rewarding reasons to start a business for moms. There is nothing better than watching an idea come to life, especially one that allows all moms to enjoy their motherhood journey in style like I have been able to do.

BCM: Can you share some items that you always carry in your diaper bag?

JM: Since my kids are so close in age, the list was endless when they were both babies because I had to carry two sets of everything! But now that they are older (3 years and 19 months), packing is a lot easier. I still have to pack the necessities for my little one such as diapers and wipes, but I must have an emergency kit consisting of kid's neosprin, bandaids, aquaphor and sunblock lotion. Also an extra set of clothes for both of them, quick easy snacks, water bottles and their favorite toy just in case they feel like giving me a hard time.

BCM: Tell us about the growing TWELVElittle brand. We love the new styles - what is in store for the future?

JM: It is a huge encouragement that we are getting so much love and support within our first year! The first time I noticed a mom I didn’t know carrying a TWELVElittle bag was super exciting. We really looked at all the things our stores and early customers were both loving and disliking about our diaper bags, and redesigned our collection for Fall 2014. We take all customer feedback very seriously and added or removed some details. I don't want to leak too much information but my personal favorite is our new Allure backpack in Sapphire!

BCM: How do you manage your work/life balance?

JM: I don't think I have an answer to that question LOL!!! It's something that I ask myself every day. One thing I repeat julia min twelve littleto myself at times of work stress is: "They are only diaper bags. It is not the end of the world". Just because I can't finish a certain project or reply to emails instantly because I have to get back to my kids, doesn't mean it is the end of my career. I remind myself that family is my priority no matter what. When I am with my family, I focus on them alone. It is challenging, but it can be done.

BCM: What are your favorite mommy and me activities? Any fun family “must do” activities you can recommend to other moms?

JM: Since I work, I make sure I spend a lot of quality time with my kids on the weekends. Every Friday, I take my kids to Mommy & Me classes or family activity play centers. These classes are great because I am interacting with them with music, crafts or story time, rather than just watching them play. Not only do I love watching my kids explore and have fun, but I also notice my older son randomly checking to see if I am having fun as well!
