5 Healthy Changes You Can Do Right Now

Conducting a major overhaul to your health and wellness in one fell swoop is a sure fire way to crash and burn. I believe that small, incremental changes to your everyday life is one way to see lasting results. It’s not about trying out the latest diet or health trick, it’s about striving for a well balanced, healthy lifestyle.

I came up with 5 easy ways you can make small improvements right this minute.

1. Drink water right when you wake up

The human body is made up of 55-75% water. That’s a lot of H2O. After you spend 8 hours sleeping your body can be dehydrated. Drink water first thing in the morning to jump start your digestion and rejuvenate your body.

Do this tonight: Before going to bed, fill up a large glass of water and put it on your nightstand. In the morning drink it as soon as you turn off your alarm. Feeling fancy? Throw in a wedge of lemon or some cucumber slices.

2. Take the stairs

Making small changes to break up your daily routine is the best way to sneak in some extra physical activity. Take the stairs instead of the elevator or get off the subway one stop earlier on your way home from work. These tweaks to your day will leave you with more energy and a clear mind.

3. Get some zerious zzz’s

As our lives get busier and our schedules get tighter, it seems like sleep is usually the first thing to get cut. Don’t skimp on sleep! Adults need 7-8 hours every night. After a good night’s sleep, the effects are apparent; we feel more alert, more energetic, happier, and better able to function. Charge your phone away from your nightstand to forgo any late night games of Candy Crush.

4. Up your fresh fruits and veggies

Whole fruits and vegetables are packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants. They help prevent sickness and make us feel in tip top shape. Incorporate at least one more fresh dish into your day. Try a side salad at dinner, a smoothie for breakfast, or an apple as an afternoon snack.

5. Write down your goals

A study conducted by Dr. Gail Matthews, a psychology professor at Dominican University in California, found that people who write down their goals are 42 percent more likely to achieve them than people who don’t.

Do this now: Take a few minutes and think about what you want to accomplish tomorrow. Then, write it down! You’ll be amazed at how quickly you can check off the list.
