BCM Mom of the Month  - July 2008

Sponsored by:

Bobbi Rebell Kaufman

Television Reporter, ThomsonReuters

Children

Mom to Harry (1) Stepmom to Ashley (11) and Bradley (8)

BCM - How did your life change when you became a mom?

Bobbi -  I first became a stepmother, so I didn't start with a newborn like my friends - I instantly had big kids. All of a sudden instead of going to a friend's art gallery opening or the ballet, I was at baseball games cheering Bradley on, or taking Ashley to the American Idol concert. When Harry came along, the kids were thrilled to have a little brother.

BCM - What have been some of your most memorable moments as a mom?

Bobbi - My wedding day, when my husband and I were up on the chuppah with Ashley and Bradley right there with us was very special. I didn't just become a wife, I became a parent. They have been so accepting of me and really supportive of their dad's remarriage. Then obviously the day my son Harry was born. I still remember U2's song 'Beautiful Day" playing in the room.

BCM - What has been the biggest challenge for you in motherhood?

Bobbi - Going back to work has been hard, but staying home is hard too! I have a lot of respect for women that are on duty 24/7!

BCM - How do you manage your work/life balance? Any advice for moms?

Bobbi - I am realistic that if I want to be a mom, and keep my career, both have to give a little. I am very fortunate that  ThomsonReuters lets me work 4 days a week, but that also means not always getting the top assignments. If a big interview falls on a Friday, I can't just say I'll come in for it-- I have to stick to my schedule or it just doesn't work. So I don't get the interview. And working means there are things in Harry's life that I miss as well because I have to be at work.

BCM - What activities do you like to do with the kids?

Bobbi - The big kids each have their thing: Bradley does Fencing and Baseball, so we go to his games. Ashley is into drama, so there is always a new play to go to see. Since they live in the suburbs with their mom, when they are with us in NYC we try to do city stuff like go to museums and the park. We have also been known to spend way too much time playing the Nintendo Wii!  Overall we just like to spend time as a family hanging out.

BCM - How do you maintain a sense of style while juggling a business and being a mom.

Bobbi - I buy a lot on the internet, and I shop locally near my home on the Upper East Side. We have a lot of great stores in the neighborhood, so I can shop without having to go far.

BCM- What are your favorite “Mom Essentials” and why?

Bobbi - Its not very original but I don't know how I would survive without my bugaboo stroller or skip hop diaper bag- there's a reason they are everywhere! I also am addicted to Lancome's tinted moisturizer. It has SPF in it so it also protects your skin from the sun.

BCM - If you could give another mom or expectant mom one piece of advice, what would it be?

Bobbi - Sleep train your child as soon as possible and make nightime routines a top priority.  A well rested mom is a happy mom.

BCM - Which BCM event was your favorite?

Bobbi - I loved the expectant moms events- great advice and great products. Rockin with Andy is always so much fun too!
