BCM - How did your life change when you became a mom?

Cozy - It took on a shocking new dimension that I was totally unprepared for.  Having worked with children for so long, I thought I understood- boy was I wrong! You just can’t understand that love & connection until you have a child.

BCM - What has been your most memorable moment (s) as a mom?

Cozy -Impossible to answer, but what I can say is that it’s life’s little moments with my kids that feel most special.  Swimming in a lake on the side of a road in Maine or teaching them to play backgammon, those are the moments I won’t forget.

BCM - What has been the biggest challenge for you in motherhood?  Any advice for new moms?

Cozy -Staying organized and managing their schedules is challenging. My advice is to keep a detailed calendar and write everything down., even if you think you will remember (you won’t!)

BCM - Congratulations on the success of Cozy Cuts Salons, So Cozy Hair Care and your book Cozy's Complete Guide to Girl Hair!  What was the inspiration in starting your business?

Cozy - Back in 1992, my friend told me about a bad experience she had when she brought her nephew into an adult salon to get his hair cut.  The little boy started to cry and the salon asked them to leave.  That was my “lightning bolt moment!”  Haircuts should be fun for the kids and stress-free for the parents, hence the opening of Cozy’s Cuts For Kids on Madison Avenue in 1994.

BCM - Getting a child's haircut can be a challenging experience.  Do you have any advice for parents to make it easier?

Cozy - YES!  Be sure to schedule a time of day that is good for your child, not nap time or meal time. Try to prepare baby a little bit by talking about it, but not too much.  Children can sense when you are stressed and can pick up on that.  When talking about it, avoid using the word “cut”, as that can be a scary word for a child.  Instead, use trim or style.  Lastly, try to stop by the salon a day prior to the appointment, just so your child can get a feel for the salon so everything won’t feel so new.

BCM - How do you manage your work life balance?

Cozy - Good question! I’m always re-evaluating and reminding myself to keep perspective.  That’s every working mother’s big question. Leave the dishes in the sink and hang out with your kids!

BCM - What types of activities do you like to do w/ your kids?

Cozy - My boys are very sporty & active, so we tend to do a lot of outdoor activities and we love to experiment.  Snowboarding, surfing, fishing, traveling- it’s all good!
