A Chat With Superdad Igor Bekker, Co-Founder of MADE OF

In addition to being a father of two, Igor Bekker is an inspired leader with expertise in digital marketing, e-commerce and tech. He recently co-founded MADE OF, an NSF-certified organic baby-care brand. Igor shared the inspiration behind MADE OF, a fun white lie, and the truth about his grueling schedule.

What inspired you to start MADE OF?

I started to wonder why brands were claiming to be natural when, by looking at the back of their label, you can tell they’re really not. I discovered this stemmed from the lack of regulation—there’s a loophole for anyone to create a product and sell it on Amazon as “organic” or “natural.” We wanted to be more transparent.

What was the most surprising thing you learned in your research for MADE OF?

That skin and personal care brands aren’t transparent about how they manufacture their products. For instance, how do you know the sunscreen you’re buying is SPF30?

Has becoming a father changed the way you look at everyday products and how they’re made?

My wife and I have always been healthy eaters and active. From birth, my wife ate healthy with a vast variety of foods to ensure the nutrition is passed on to our kids. As our sons started eating, we’ve ensured their diets have a good balance, and we always vet the products we use both ourselves and on our kids.

If you could hand off one chore to someone else each day, what would it be?

Writing. I’m not a big fan of content writing.

What is your favorite thing to do to relax and unwind?

Hiking. Getting away from the city on the weekends and spending time outside hiking or picnicking helps me disconnect from my 100 hour workweeks.

What is your best parenting hack?

Technology is like a drug, but you can’t avoid it. Introduce it with care and set guidelines.

What is the best white lie that you’ve told your child?

That chicken builds muscles, veggies have vitamins to keep us healthy, fruits give us energy – and after you eat your meal, you’ll instantly be able to lift heavy things and run super fast without getting tired. Wait, that’s not a lie!

If you could describe fatherhood in one word, what would it be?

Patience.

What’s one moment in your parenting journey that has made you proud?

My sons’ kindness to other people.

What is one piece of advice you want to pass along to your children?

Speak less, listen more.

What is one piece of advice you would pass along to other parents?

Develop emotional intelligence.

How do you tackle the work/life balance?

I don’t— I’m terrible at it. My wife just puts up with me. I get up at 7 a.m. and go to sleep at 2 a.m. seven days per week.

What was the last book you read?
