When Kyle Minarsky, a third generation mattress maker, learned he was going to be a father, he discovered the existing options for crib mattresses didn’t live up to his standards for safety and comfort. He solved this problem by creating the Bundle of Dreams™ crib mattress. We spoke with Kyle about his company, his favorite ways to unwind, and a hack parents of little ones won’t want to miss.
Congratulations on the success of Bundle of Dreams. What inspired you to start your own business?
When my wife and I found out we were pregnant with our daughter Ella, we wanted to make sure Ella had the healthiest, safest place to sleep. When I told my dad and father-in-law what I was creating, we decided to start a business around the product and concept.
What was the most surprising thing you learned about crib mattresses when you were researching them for your business?
The most surprising thing I learned was that infants spend up to 17 hours a day in their bed. I was also surprised by how little parents know about the necessary health and safety features associated with their sleep.
If you could hand off one chore to someone else each day, what would it be?
It would definitely be walking our two dogs at 6 a.m. before I leave for work.
What is your favorite thing to do to relax and unwind?
I’m an artist. Though it’s a bit on the dark side, I consider myself a surreal pointillist. Lately, I’ve been transitioning into pastels. I also play chess online regularly.
What is your best parenting hack?
Ella is obsessed with her “lovey” which gets dirty because she cannot go anywhere without it. So we have five back ups in our apartment and one at each of the grandparents houses in case of a lovey crisis.
What is the best white lie that you’ve told your child?
To help limit Ella’s screen time, I tell her, “Elmo is sleeping so we can’t watch him on TV right now.”
If you could describe fatherhood in one word, what would it be?
What’s one moment in your parenting journey that has made you proud?
Watching Ella take her first steps, and seeing how determined she is with every step since.
What is one piece of advice you want to pass along to your children?
Be confident and challenge yourself.
What is one piece of advice you would pass along to other parents?
Each stage has its challenges and every child is different; don’t compare your child’s development, but rather enjoy the milestones.
How do you tackle the work/life balance?
I wake up as early as I can so I can get my work done. The earlier I finish, the sooner I get to see my wife, daughter and dogs.
What was the last book you read?
Goodnight Moon… in terms of personal interest, the last book I read was One Up On Wall Street by Peter Lynch
