In the midst of balancing a busy career in the fashion industry with motherhood, Ariane Gold realized she needed a bag that was versatile, roomy and fashionable enough to keep up with the needs of busy women. She launched goldno.8, which offers customizable, stylish bags. We spoke with Ariane about the inspiration behind goldno.8, launching a Kickstarter campaign, and a white lie you might be tempted to try at home.
Congratulations on the success of goldno.8! What inspired you to start your own company?
I spent over 20 years in the fashion industry, working for some of the best, like Isaac Mizrahi and Ralph Lauren. Over the years, I amassed an incredible amount of knowledge. Most importantly, I learned that many women don’t want to be told what to wear and how to wear it—they want to have a say in how they style themselves, AND they love being included in the design process. I came up with the concept for goldno.8 with all of this in mind. goldno.8 gives our customers the tools to create a bag as cool and individual as they are. They can trick it out or clean it up, and their goldno.8 will transform with their mood, outfit and tastes!
You started your business through a successful Kickstarter campaign. Do you have any tips for women thinking of launching a business with crowdfunding?
Kickstarter is definitely NOT for the faint of heart! It was both an exhilarating and terrifying experience. It was a crash course in gaining knowledge about my business, my customers and my fledgling brand.
Kickstarter has a massive audience, but with thousands of campaigns on its platform at any given moment, it’s easy for your project to get buried on the website. The key to getting the Kickstarter audience to see your project is to be selected to be on the high traffic “Projects We Love” page. The more traffic to your campaign, the more pledges, the more success!
What’s next for goldno.8—do you have any new designs in the works?
We have a lot of amazing things on the horizon for goldno.8. New styles, colors, straps and accessories! We are also looking into opening our first brick and mortar store this fall—so stay tuned for big announcements!
If you could hand off one chore to someone else each day, what would it be?
Making school lunches!
What is your favorite thing to do to relax and unwind?
There is very little that I find more relaxing than watching my puppy Buddy run and play with his friends at the dog run. I try to take him there every evening after dinner with my kids.
What is your best parenting hack?
For the mom on the go like me, goldno.8’s The Bag in Bag is a serious game changer! The Bag in Bag is three bags in one, so it will transform with you throughout your day. Whether you’re running the kids to school, at a business meeting or having a night out, this bag fits all the bills.
What is the best white lie that you’ve told your child?
When my kids were little, I used to tell them that if they went to sleep without a fuss, the “Sleep Fairy” would put $1 under their pillow once they fell asleep. The boys made quite a bit of money, but it was well worth it! It was pretty devastating for me when they figured out that the Sleep Fairy wasn’t real!
If you could describe motherhood/fatherhood in one word, what would it be?
What’s one moment in your motherhood journey that has made you proud?
Last December, my younger son Noah decided to take some old goldno.8 pins and set up a table in front of his school yard. He called his shop “Schwartzy’s Pin Shop.” He merchandised his “store” beautifully, and spent the entire weekend SELLING. He KILLED it!! It was awesome to see him hustle – he is definitely my child!
What is one piece of advice you want to pass along to your children?
If you believe in something, never give up on it. Move mountains to make it happen.
What is one piece of advice you would pass along to other moms?
My favorite analogy for motherhood comes from the preflight safety demonstration – “Passengers should always put their own masks on before helping children.” Take care of yourself first. You’ll be a much more effective parent if you are happy, healthy and balanced.
How do you tackle the work/life balance?
To be honest, I’m not sure that I have!
