Stay-at-home mom Keri Smith designed and created her own teething necklaces when her daughter began teething. She quickly realized that she shouldn’t keep her chic designs to herself, and Dents de Bébé Teething Boutique was born. Keri filled us in on her new collections, how her necklaces work to soothe people with sensory needs, and she shared a very wise parenting hack.
We love your jewelry! Tell us about the inspiration behind Dents de Bebé.
After having my daughter, I learned about teething necklaces and started making them—but I didn’t like that I looked like a baby’s chew toy when I wore them. After making a teething necklace to look like a friend’s fashion necklace, I knewI had something new to present to the world!
What’s next for Dents de Bebé—do you have any new collections on the horizon?
I recently released new designs in the Mission Collection, which is a collection of teething necklaces that have been inspired by African jewelry! The Spring 2019 collection was released in late February, and the new Boho designs will be released at the end of April!
Tell us a bit about the benefits of your jewelry for people with sensory and other needs.
There are some individuals with autism, anxiety, ADHD and other special needs who are able to calm themselves by tugging, squeezing and biting on teething necklaces. The rubbery silicone is soft and soothing, while necklaces with wood pieces provide a hard surface that also helps relieve tension. Fortunately, with Dents de Bébé, they get to wear trendy jewelry that helps provide that relief!
If you could hand off one chore to someone else each day, what would it be?
Folding laundry. I don’t know what it is exactly about folding laundry that I hate so much, but it seems like the most tedious thing I have to do in life! I’d rather spend an entire day painting a room and assembling all of the furniture than fold clothes for 20 minutes! Lol!
What is your favorite thing to do to relax and unwind?
I stay at home with a toddler, and I’m trying to build a brand and business. So my moments of relaxation are with my glass of wine and a shower before I crash in bed!
What is your best parenting hack?
Establishing a 7pm bedtime is the smartest thing I’ve done as a parent! Nicole gets plenty of rest and wakes up happy, and I get several hours to work, spend time with my hubby or have “me time” every single night!
What is the best white lie that you’ve told your child?
If you don’t eat your vegetables, you won’t grow up to be a big girl.
If you could describe motherhood/fatherhood in one word, what would it be?
Love. I know that sounds so simple and cliché, but once you become a parent, you experience a kind of love that you can’t describe and couldn’t have possibly imagined before.
What’s one moment in your motherhood journey that has made you proud?
Not only do I have a 20-month-old daughter, but I have a 19-year old son! I really struggled with breastfeeding both of my children. With my son, I stopped after about six weeks because he couldn’t latch right. My daughter had the same issue, but I toughed it out using shields. I was about ready to give up around six months, but things suddenly got better and I was able to make it a whole year!
What is one piece of advice you want to pass along to your children?
You aren’t who the world says you are, and you don’t have to be what the world tells you that you should be. Find something you can do in your life that is beneficial to others and live the life you want to live!
What is one piece of advice you would pass along to other moms?
Pay attention to what parenthood is showing you about yourself, and adjust accordingly. Our kids tend to be mirrors showing us a reflection of ourselves… the good and the bad!
How do you tackle the work/life balance?
Since I work from home now, I have a lot more control over that balance than I did when I worked in corporate America. I make the balance by doing the bulk of my work only when my daughter is sleeping, both during the day and at night. Thank God she’s a great sleeper!
What was the last book you read?
Invent It, Sell It, Bank It by Lori Greneir. She’s my favorite shark on Shark Tank, and she has great advice for entrepreneurs based on all of her experience and success!
Favorite Beauty Product:
Murad Skin Perfecting Lotion. I still struggle with acne, and this moisturizer is like magic!
Favorite Form of Exercise:
The elliptical. It always makes me feel like I’ve really accomplished something, even if it was just a few minutes!
What is on your DVR?
Shark Tank, Bubble Guppies, and re-runs of Fixer Upper are my DVR go-to’s!
Instagram, for social and business! I’m always taking pictures, so it’s a perfect platform for me!
Favorite Kids Store:
Build-a-Bear… I’m all about creativity and I love anything that allows kids to express themselves creatively!
