A Chat with Supermoms Majo Mansour and Lorena Garcia, Co-Founders of Majka

As new moms, we often focus on making sure our babies are getting the right nutrition, sometimes forgetting about our own nutritional needs. That’s why Majo Mansour and Lorena Garcia created Majka—a line of healthy snacks designed to enhance lactation for new moms. We spoke with Majo and Lorena about postpartum challenges, their proudest mom moments, and a hack for dealing with picky eaters.

Congratulations on the success of Majka!  Majo, as a certified kids’ nutritionist, do you have any tips for parents to deal with picky eaters?

Majo: Don’t give up! Kids tend to like something one day and hate it the next. Also involving kids in cooking or even shopping for fresh fruits and vegetables makes them excited and feel like they’re part of the process.

Lorena, you experienced some postpartum challenges. What most helped you get through those difficulties?

Lorena: My biggest postpartum challenge was not being able to focus on myself! I was so focused on the baby and everything else going on that I forgot myself. I put myself last, and that created emotional and physical issues like ZERO energy, mood swings, low immunity and losing my hair.

I quickly realized I needed to take the time to practice self-care. Having family support and a strong support system helped me tremendously. Once I switched my mindset and understood that taking care of me was a priority, everything else fell into place.

If you could hand off one chore to someone else each day, what would it be?

Lorena: COOKING! I LOVE providing my family with healthy food, but I do not love the process of cooking or cleaning.

Majo: Laundry! I know that for some, it’s relaxing to fold laundry, but to me it’s not enjoyable at all, and it takes so much time out of my day!

What is your favorite thing to do to relax and unwind?

Lorena:  I love to listen to podcasts and learn. I know it’s sounds weird, but I can’t really sit still with nothing to do when I do get time for myself. I love to learn what makes me feel good. I also recently got into five-minute meditations— I love Headspace!

Majo: I love cooking and listening to music. My favorite thing is to have the free time to come up with a new recipe while listening to music.

What is your best parenting hack?

Lorena: Leave your phone in a different room while you are hanging out with your family! It’s about quality, NOT quantity of time.

What is the best white lie that you’ve told your child?

Lorena: That shrimp was chicken— and it worked!

If you could describe motherhood in one word, what would it be?

Lorena: Unconditional

Majo: Gift

What’s one moment in your motherhood journey that has made you proud?

Lorena: I was seriously so proud when I was able to dress Diego by myself for the first time!  I never knew dressing a newborn would be so challenging.

Majo: When I was told by my son’s school that he is very mature for his age– at 3 years old! Also when he came out of the bathroom one day after peeing on his own.

What is one piece of advice you want to pass along to your children?

Lorena: Don’t let anyone else tell you how to live your life.  Always do what feels right to YOU. You are the only one that will live with consequences of what you do and don’t do!

Majo: Be humble, but not weak. Take chances and learn from your mistakes.

What is one piece of advice you would pass along to other moms?

Lorena: It’s not selfish to take care of YOU, it’s actually selfish not to because your family needs you at your best. Always follow your heart, listen to what others say, but in the end only YOU know what’s best for you and your family.

Majo: Be patient with yourself. Motherhood is really hard and it’s a job that never stops. Make sure to stop and take care of yourself because you can’t be strong, happy or make others happy without making yourself happy first.

How do you tackle the work/life balance?

Lorena: It’s a work in progress… I feel like I work on this everyday! I am more mindful of my time and not wasting it. You would be surprised how much you can get accomplished without looking at Instagram 100 times a day. Ha!

Majo: It’s been a little challenging, especially after having my second baby, but I’m working on it!

What was the last book you read?

Lorena: The last book I read that I really liked was Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert. I love her take on creativity and her theory on how ideas actually go from person to person until someone turns them into reality.

Majo: Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition.
