Interviewing some of Hollywood’s hottest celebrities and cooking up creative dishes, Sara Gore shows us her passions everyday on NBC’s New York Live. The mom of two (soon to be three) is a passionate foodie (she was a former chef and caterer) and can be seen in The Today Show kitchen often. While we’re not watching her on television, Sara is spending time at home with her family and volunteering locally with City Harvest and with the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals.

Congratulations on all of your success hosting both New York Live and Open House. What inspired you to get involved in hosting television?

I was acting and cooking …separately. I left my job with Jean Georges to do an off Broadway play and while I was in it I met a hosting agent who started submitting me for food related hosting jobs. Did a pilot for the Food Network, a cooking series for General Mills, and then booked a job with a little lifestyle start-up company called Code TV which soon changed its name to LXTV. We launched Open House and 1st Look and got bought by NBC. The rest is history.

You are a former professional cook. With two (soon to be three) little ones in your house, what’s your go-to meal to make for them?

I like to make a mac n cheese and sneak in a vegetable in place of some of the cream or cheese. SO I’ll add butternut squash or sweet potato (because it’s the same color and they are none the wiser.) That way they get the extra nutrients, less fat, and it’s creamy and delicious. Other than that they love a quiche believe it or not. We call it “dinner pie.” That way I know they get the protein with the eggs and I add vegetables to that as well. Typically mushrooms, caramelized onions, and goat cheese or feta. May not be the typical kids food, but that’s what I like about it. I have given them all kinds of things and we find what sticks. We also do a lot of fun and fancy pizzas. My 4 year old loves a mushroom white truffle pizza. It’s his favorite!

If you could hand off one chore to someone else each day, what would it be?

Can it be washing my face at the end of the night? I say to my husband atleast 3 times before I go to bed….”I have to wash my face.” He usually counts and says…that’s three. I dread it because it’s a process and by the time I get there…I’m ready to drop!

What is your favorite thing to do to relax and unwind?

I love to cook. Even when I know I need to rest because I have two little ones and I’m 5 1/2 months pregnant…..I can’t help myself. I just cook. It’s my favorite thing in the world. I’m really into cakes right now so if it’s someone’s birthday….I’m making a cake.

What is your best parenting hack?

Don’t sweat the small stuff, bribery, planning ahead, and delegating!

What is the best white lie that you’ve told your child?

My son told me the other day that his brother put a toy down the toilet and flushed it. I couldn’t tell if he did it or not. I told him whoever puts things in the toilet has to dig under the house and clear the pipes. I think he ran upstairs to tell his brother this terrible news.

If you could describe motherhood/fatherhood in one word, what would it be?

PATIENCE. Patience is the key!! Even when you think are a patient person….kids will always test this. I’m not sure you can ever have enough.

What’s one moment in your motherhood journey that has made you proud?

I don’t know that it’s one moment. I think it’s all the moments. I think being a mother has made me realize what I’m capable of. I’m proud to be a working mother. It couldn’t be more difficult and more rewarding. I’m deep in it and I love it!!

What is one piece of advice you want to pass along to your children?

Don’t ever let anyone tell you you can’t do something that makes you happy. (So long as it’s not hurting anyone else of course.)

What is one piece of advice you would pass along to other moms?

Don’t be so hard on yourself. Not every moment is going to be your best moment. That’s life. It’s messy and that’s real and that’s ok.

How do you tackle the work/life balance?

When I’m at work I focus on work and when I’m home I focus on my family. I think the distinction needs to be made and you need to live in the moment whenever you can. I’m not saying that’s an easy task, but it’s worth the effort. Putting our phones away while we’re with our kids is something we still work on daily.

What was the last book you read?

I’m always reading something for work. The last book I was reading was Laurie Hernandez’s book “I Got This.” She came on my show New York Live this week and I like to read as much as I can for a guest out of respect and so we can have a better conversation. I don’t like to feel unprepared for anything.

What’s in your diaper bag?

Right now it’s minimal because I’m potty training my youngest. It’s 2 diapers, some Vaseline, wipes, and usually a snack or two. Come June…..it will be a much heftier bag.

Fun Facts:

Favorite Beauty Product:

I LOVE beauty products, but I live by eye creams and serums …..and I can’t forget my sunless tanner. My go-to tanners are St. Topez mousse, Roxanne Rizzo spray, or for a non-developing bronzer….Lorac Tantalizer. It even smells good!

Favorite Form of Exercise:

Cooking? Ha. Well since I do some much cooking (and eating) I invested in a good treadmill this year. I also have a set of weights that I use. When I’m pregnant …. I get it in when I can where I can. When I’m not pregnant I try to mix it up at the gym. Every year I tell myself I’m going to get into Yoga and it just never happens.

What is on your DVR?

It’s a real mix! Dateline, Fixer Upper, Great American Baking Show, Curious George, This Is Us, Toy Story, Charlie Rose, Open House (because I actually do get design ideas from my own show), usually whatever Showtime show is currently on (right now it’s Homeland), and I’m sure lots of other things!

Favorite App:

Fresh Direct and Amazon Prime!! I live by both and am on them every other day. They make my life easier.

Favorite Kids Store:

For clothes…it’s Zara! They make the best kids clothes. I was worried when I had two boys that they wouldn’t be any fun to dress. Zara has made it fun! Now that I have a baby girl on the way….it will be even more fun! I’m welcoming pink into my life in a big way and I cant wait!
