BCM: If you could describe motherhood in one word, what would it be?
LS: Exhilarating
BCM: What’s one moment in your motherhood journey that has made you proud?
LS: There are a million so far. Everything from watching the girls graduate from preschool to heading off to sleep-away camp — they are all so special. I also feel proud when I hear from other mothers that my daughters were a pleasure and very well-behaved on a playdate.
BCM: What is one piece of advice you want to pass along to your children?
LS: Work hard and be nice.
BCM: Congratulations on the success of POPSUGAR! It’s come a long way since you started in your living room 11 years ago. Is there anything new for the site that you’re looking forward to?
LS: POPSUGAR is always adding new features, video series, and all sorts of content to the sites, and offline we are updating our awesome app. We’re also creating new businesses so it’s easier for our audience to be inspired and act on whatever it is we are writing about, whether that’s a recipe to cook, a workout to do, a playlist to listen to, or new shoes to buy (check out our Emoticode app to learn more!). We’re very excited about the growth we still have after 10 years and we plan to expand even more into video. We want to be everywhere you want to consume POPSUGAR.
BCM: We’re so excited for your new book, POWER YOUR HAPPY: Work Hard, Play Nice, and Build Your Dream Life. In it, you share a lot of stories about your personal life and what it took to build POPSUGAR to the empire that it is today. Do you have a favorite story in the book?
LS: That’s like asking me to pick a favorite daughter! I can’t pick just one. 😉
BCM: What advice do you give to those women who are just starting out in their blogging journey or are just thinking about starting a blog?
LS: It’s important to find time every day to write something. Even if it’s short and sweet, get something off the list, off your mind, and onto the site. New content tells your audience you want them coming back, plus it trains your mind to keep the creative juices flowing!
BCM: What is one piece of advice you would pass along to other moms?
LS: It gets even better, more fun, and enjoyable as they get older.
BCM: How do you tackle work/life balance?
LS: Everyday is a different juggle, and I just try to do my best. First goal is to aim for as much of a routine as possible so everyone stays sane, then go from there. My work calendar mostly starts with blocking off important family dates (school break, holidays, etc.) then I book up as much time as I can to be as efficient as possible.
BCM: If you could hand off one chore to someone else each day, what would it be?
LS: Laundry
BCM: WHAT is your favorite thing to do to relax and unwind?
LS: Spa days are a super-special treat, but I’m just trilled if I can get the kids to bed early enough that I can sit and chill on the couch and watch TV.
BCM: WHAT IS THE BEST WHITE LIE THAT YOU’VE TOLD YOUR CHILD?
LS: Our girls love their pacifiers, and we’ve had a hard time taking them away, so we made up a story about the paci fairy coming: we leave all the pacis in a box for her and she takes them to other younger babies who need them more. We put it on the doorstep and then ta-da! they’re gone. The fairy even leaves a lollipop and card behind. It’s worked out well for two of our three daughters. The youngest is about to go through it, and she knows all about the fairy already.
BCM: What is your best parenting hack?
LS: Setting up craft to-dos or ordering Kiwi Crates so they can be busy on weekend mornings and I don’t have to feel guilty about heading to SoulCycle for an hour me-break!
