BCM- How did your life change when you became a mom?
Jodi – I never realized I could love anyone so much. And, you realize whatever you thought was difficult before can’t compare to some of the challenges of being a mom. Oh, and I totally took for granted all the sleep I used to get.
BCM- What has been the biggest challenge for you in motherhood? BCM – Any advice for new moms?
Jodi – The biggest challenge has been having to choose which things to make time for. There is no longer time for everything so sometimes it’s a choice between exercising or returning phone calls. The best advice I can give is to do what feels natural for you rather than what everyone else tells you to do. Every mother has a great sense of what the right thing is for her child – it’s just a matter of listening to yourself and not everyone around you.
BCM- What activities do you like to do with your family?
Jodi – We love enjoying all the activities in NYC whether it’s the playground, Central Park or the zoo. And, we love taking a walk with no real destination. Living in NYC is just amazing because there is always something going on. We also love to make and eat brunch together on the weekends.
BCM- Almost 1 year ago you started DinDins, a healthy, organic toddler food delivery service in NYC. What inspired you to start your company?
Jodi – Between my background as a nutritionist and having written a cookbook, The Little Black Apron, I was continuously getting questions from clients and friends about what to feed their toddlers. I couldn’t find many things that were healthy, organic, kid-friendly and convenient even though I knew there was a demand for it. I realized I could provide what all busy parents are looking for which is how my mom and I started DinDins.
BCM – What types of toddler food do you have available? Do you have plans to expand outside of NYC?
Jodi – We offer breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks such as our Banana French Toast Stix, Artichoke, Corn and Chicken Quesadilla and DinDins Chewy Oat & Fruit Bar. We rotate our menu so there are new items to try. And, our foods are delivered fresh, but are meant to be frozen so you always have something healthy to feed your toddler or leave for someone else to feed him/her. We are working on expanding to other places in the tri-state area and eventually shipping nationally.
BCM – Can you share some advice for moms who are planning to start their own company?
Jodi – Make sure you have a great support system. My husband is so supportive, especially emotionally. It takes a lot to start a business and have a family and there are days when you just want to throw in the towel. You need someone that can help you through those days because it’s so worth it.
BCM- How do you manage your work/life balance?
Jodi – It requires a lot of planning and thinking about what needs to get done. Again, it comes to prioritizing – I pick the things that have to get done first and start from there.
BCM- Name your favorite Big City Moms event to date.
Jodi – I love all the BCM events, so it’s hard to choose. I would probably have to say the Father’s Day Event was my favorite. Many moms frequently get to go to the events, but seeing all the dads have it be their day with the kids was amazing. And, I LOVED the Biggest Baby Shower Ever so much that it almost made me want to be pregnant again right now.
