BCM: Congratulations on your book, Smarty Marty’s Got Game. What inspired you to write the book?

AG:  Thank you! Everyday at the park I see young girls who love and understand the game on an equal level as boys and when I was approached by Cameron & Co. I thought it could be a great opportunity to explore that dynamic. I settled on the premise of scoring a game since it’s now become somewhat of a lost art and have a heroine in a male dominated world. I was able to make the book a true tribute to my grandmother who loved baseball so much, albeit she was a Dodgers fan, grrr! Just before she passed away she said she really hoped I moved forward on the book project. Smarty Marty is named after her (Martha) and I was able to immortalize one of my favorite people. I love that so many people get to experience a little bit of what my grandmother meant to me. She’ll continue to be with us with a new Smarty Marty Chapter book due out in Spring 2017!

BCM: What’s your favorite thing about being the in game TV reporter during a professional Major League baseball game?

AG: There’s too many to choose just one. I think the most important is utilizing the stage of Major League Baseball to set a good example to young girls and attempt to blaze a trail. The position I currently hold did not exist when I was younger so I feel and extreme responsibility and appreciation for what I’m able to do. Talk ball and put a few more cracks in the glass ceiling. Next spring I’ll be in my 10th season.

BCM: What is one piece of advice you would pass along to other moms?

AG:  If you aren’t taking care of yourself you’re in no place to take care of others. Make yourself a priority too.

BCM: How do you tackle work/life balance?Amy Gutierez

AG: Carefully!I try very hard to be present in whatever situation I’m in. If I’m with the kids I try to not worry about the Giants game and while I never really stop thinking about my children, while I’m at a game I focus on the task at hand. I constantly feel overwhelmed, but procrastination only adds pressure. I write lists everyday and get to it! It always seems like I won’t have enough time to get it all done….and then somehow I do.

BCM: If you could hand off one chore to someone else each day, what would it be?

AG:   Dishes. It’s the chore that never ends. Just when you feel you’ve finished and have a sense of accomplishment up comes one of your children with another dirty spoon!

BCM: WHAT is your favorite thing to do to relax and unwind?

AG: My version of “unwind” is different than most. I play competitive soccer and it is definitely my outlet and stress release. I’m super calm after a game and feel patient yet energized….but only after I’ve sprinted and been body checked into the wall for 50 minutes!

BCM: WHAT IS THE BEST WHITE LIE THAT YOU’VE TOLD YOUR CHILD?

AG: I have Santa’s cell phone number and will not hesitate to call him right now!

BCM: What is your best parenting hack?

AG:  Sarcasm. My kids get it and it always lightens the mood.

BCM: What was the last book you read?

AG: Find Her, by Lisa Gardner. Good, but creepy. Book club selection.
