author, live fast, die hot
BCM: If you could describe motherhood in one word, what would it be?
JM: Motherhood is constant
BCM: What’s one moment in your motherhood journey that has made you proud?
JM: Watching my son share his snacks never ceases to amaze me.
BCM: What is one piece of advice you want to pass along to your children?
JM: I hope I instill my son with the confidence that he can do anything but also the understanding that failure is an opportunity for learning
BCM: Congratulations on the release of your new book, LIVE FAST DIE HOT. What was the inspiration with writing it?
JM: I like to think of my book as a postpartum romantic comedy. At its core it’s about a woman who falls in love for the first time her my life and loses control of everything (most especially herself.)
BCM: LIVE FAST DIE HOT shows parenthood, your marriage, adulthood, and so much more in a hilarious and relatable way. Do you have a favorite story you tell in the book?
JM: My favorite story is probably the story about how I got super sucked into redecorating my nursery then found myself in a fight with a guy on etsy and ended up traveling to the Atlas Mountains to meet a group of female weavers. I ended up almost getting TAKEN but did cross paths with the king of Morocco. Sid’s nursery has never looked better.
BCM: What is one piece of advice you would pass along to other moms?
JM: Don’t try to outrun your fear. Make peace with the fact that you are going to be worried for the rest of your life. And that’s okay. It actually makes you a good mom.
BCM: How do you tackle work/life balance?
JM: It’s honestly a daily struggle. When I’m home I try to make it about Sid. I act like my cell is a pack of cigarettes. Am I addicted? Yes. Do I want him to know that? Never! When it’s his time, the phones are hidden
BCM: What was the last book you read?
JM: The Last Bad Man by Miranda July
BCM: If you could hand off one chore to someone else each day, what would it be?
JM: Doing Sid’s bath. Bath time is such a pain in the ass! Especially when Sid’s gone 48 hours without washing his hair. My son is like a cute fluffy Mogwai when he’s dry but the second you pour water on his head, he becomes a full fledged Gremlin!
BCM: What is the best white lie that you’ve told your child?
JM: We were at a restaurant last week and Sid asked if he could eat Dory. The restaurant only served octopus so I told him he was going to eat Hank.
BCM: What is your best parenting hack?
JM: Nobody is better at changing a diaper while balancing on one leg in an airport lavatory than I am.
BCM: What is your favorite thing to do to relax and unwind?
JQ: I like to get out of a hot shower, crack open a bag of Pirate’s Booty and turn on The Bachelor.
