I think everyone who becomes a mother wants to be good at it. Nobody goes into it wanting to be impatient or neglectful or too exhausted to care that your kid is coloring the walls with markers.
I have two shy children. I suppose I was the same way as a child, but I still find it a little baffling how difficult it can be for them to say a simple a hello.
